The Tragic Reality of Why TikTok Banned My Account

There's no question that TikTok is one of the hottest social media platforms around. With its unique mix of short-form videos and quickly growing user base, the app has drawn comparisons to Vine and Instagram. But there's a dark side to TikTok that few users are aware of: the app's censoring of LGBTQ+ content. In September of 2018, TikTok removed videos from several high-profile LGBTQ+ users without explanation. The platform continued to remove LGBTQ+ content over the next several months, leading to accusations of censorship. TikTok has denied these accusations, saying that the removal of videos is due to a violation of terms of service. Nonetheless, the pattern of censorship is clear. LGBTQ+ content is being removed from TikTok at an alarming rate, with no explanation from the platform. This leaves LGBTQ+ users feeling unsupported and unwelcome on the app.
